Virtual Mini-Wellycon

We know everyone was very disappointed when Wellycon had to be postponed this year and it’s left a big hole in our community. Wellycon is, after all, about building community through games. So we’ve decided to do something!

Virtual Mini-Wellycon is coming, save the date:

Sat 30 May 2020, 10am-10pm

The details are evolving, we’re all learning how to do this as we go along, but we will keep you up to date as they solidify. This is what we know so far:

  • Online Lobby – to welcome everyone in, coordinate games with others and generally support you
  • Playing games – if it’s your first time, we’ll get you into something; there will be virtual ‘rooms’ to organise yourselves to play remotely
  • Tournaments – one or two tournaments with prizes being mailed out later
  • Special Guests/Demos – yes, we have some very special people coming from NZ and around the world to run play-alongs, QnA with famous designers, demo upcoming /recent releases and interactive quizzes
  • D&D – learn to play D&D with an experienced GM (GameMaster). Create a character and experience an adventure all within a couple of hours.

FREE – we know people are struggling so the entire event is free; although if you have fun, we would love it if, those who can, do contribute towards costs. A HUGE thank you in advance for those who are giving their time & energy to make this happen. We LOVE YOU!

More as things become clearer……!

Happy Gaming!

Hi Everyone!

In light of the current uncertainty, we’ve decided main Wellycon can’t realistically go ahead on Queen’s Birthday weekend this year. We’re hopeful that things won’t be like this for too long and that we’ll still be able to hold a Wellycon event later this year. Enjoy gaming over the coming months, and don’t forget to wash your hands!

What is Wellycon?

Wellycon is the biggest, fun friendly board gaming convention in New Zealand.  The con is run by a core group of volunteers with the aim of building community through games. Wellycon has grown every year (2019 over 1000 attendees) and had to move to bigger and bigger venues as a consequence!

Held over Queens Birthday weekend (June), it features a large game library which is a combination of those brought along by attendees (Wellycon doesn’t own any games) and loaned from Board Game Rentals.  Special events change every year e.g. onsite escape room, play-to-win, tournaments and there is onsite barista coffee, hot food, buy/sell/swap area and plenty of friendly board gamers.  Participants select a game, find some people who would like to play, a suitable table and go for it.

Originally holding only one convention per year, the Wellycon team now host multiple conventions across Wellington and on Matiu/Somes Island.

What can you expect at Wellycon?

Tournaments – run by volunteers with prizes supplied by our generous sponsors

Game Designers area – play-test games still in development by designers local and international

Kids session – we introduce gamers of all ages to something intriguing & new, treasure hunt and special treats for teaching other kids

Late-night Wellycon – late night gaming for a select few!

Mega-game – play a board game with up to 40 people at a time!  Everyone has a role to play as either part of a team or a rogue, all contributing the larger game-play.

Now in its 13th year Wellycon is the country’s largest annual boardgaming convention.  The main event (on Queens Birthday weekend – June) is known for being different from most gaming conventions because the focus is on being welcoming for everyone of every age, ability and interest.  We frequently get comments about the atmosphere and the all-age equality for kids and oldies alike.  Come and check it out, you’ll have a great weekend!
Held on Labour weekend (October) each year, Mini-Wellycon is just like the big convention only smaller.

This is the low-stress version of Wellycon with just as much dedicated time to game but concentrating on a smaller crowd, spot prize draws and the same great library.  Bring your new games or old favourites and meet up with some old friends or find new ones to introduce them to.

Something special…

From time to time we hold one-off or special events when the opportunity arises.  These are not necessarily every year, and not necessarily repeated, but they are always fun.  If you want to be kept abreast of these type of things as and when they happen then either:
